Lavender is a flowering herb with culinary, medicinal, aromatherapy and decorative uses. As per many it is an eco-friendly insect repellent. Lavender is also delectable eye candy in any landscape. It comes in a multitude of colors other than the standard purple and lavender. White, Indigo, yellow, Red and varying shades thereof can be found in the Lavender family.


Lavender is best planted in the spring. Various varieties bloom in both spring and summer. There are dozens of varieties of Lavender. English Lavender flowers first appear in mid to late spring. A second round sometimes materializes in the summer months.

Varieties of English Lavender

Common large English Lavender - Mature Height: 2-3 feet Medium Purple flowers in early summer.

Loddon Blue - Mature Height: 18-24 inches with very short stems. considered a semi-dwarf. Deep blue flowers in early summer.

Munstead - Mature Height: 12 to 18 inches. Medium Purple flowers in late spring and early summer. Zones 5-11

Hidcote - Mature Height: 12 to 18 inches. Dark Purple flowers in late spring and early summer. Zones 5-11 Hidcote Pink is very similar to Hidcote with the exception of it vibrant pink flowers. Hidcote Giant Lavender is a hybrid not considered English Lavender but close. It has dark purple flowers and has hardy in the same zones 5 to 11.

Jean Davis - Mature Height: 12 to 18 inches. Pale Pastel flowers in late spring and early summer. Zones 5-11

Sarah - Mature Height: 12 to 18 inches. Blue flowers in late spring and early summer. Zones 5-9

Melissa - Mature Height: 18-24″ with shorter stems. Pink flowers in early summer, popular culinary herb.

Miss Katherine - Mature Height: 15 to 18 inches. Pale Paink flowers in late spring and early summer. Zones 5-9

Mitcham Grey - Mature Height: 20″ Deep purple flowers, green grey foliage

Royal Purple - Mature Height: 2-3 feet. Deep Purple Flowers in early summer

Royal Velvet - Mature Height: 2-3 feet. Stems slightly over 1 foot. Deep Purple Flowers sometime variagated in early summer. Mild aroma. Great for lavender tea.

Sachet - Mature Height: 18-24″ Light blue flowers early summer, very fragrant, favored for potpouri and as its name indicates, floral sachets

Sharon Roberts - Mature Height: 20-24″ Dark purple blossoms in Summer.

Vera - Mature Height: 18-20 inches. Lavender / lilac colored flowers in late spring and early summer. Zones 5-11

Other Lavender Varieties

Abriali Lavender - Mature Height:3 to 4 feet. Hybrid used largely for lavender oil production. Purple Flowers in spring and early summer.

Common Spanish Lavender - Mature Height: 1.5 to 2 feet. Purple pine cone shaped flowers appear in spring and early summer. Zones 8-11

Dutch Mill Lavender - Mature Height: 1.5 to 2 feet. Light Purple flowers spring to early summer. Hybrid. Zones 5-11

Edelweiss Lavender - Mature Height: 2 to 3 feet. Very fragrant white flowers with only a smidgeon of a hint of lavender appear in spring and early summer. Hybrid. Zones 5-11

French Lavender - Mature Height: 3 to 4 feet. Flowers light purple in spring and early summer. The name French Lavender sometimes refers to Spanish Lavender. Allardii Lavender is a variety of French Lavender that is very similar to common French lavender but with smaller less attractive blooms. Zones 8-11

Goodwin Creek Gray - Mature Height: 2 to 3 feet. Deep Lavender flowers offset by silver grey foliage makes a stunning garden plant. Zones 7-9

Grappenhall Lavender - Mature Height:3 to 4 Feet. Lavender to medium purple colored slender flowers spring to summer. Leaves are fairly long as opposed to other varieties. Hybrid. Zones 5-11

Grosso Lavender - Mature Height: 1.5 to 2 feet. Grown for its oils used in cosmetics and perfumes. Grosso Lavender unlike most other varieties has highly attractive purple calyxes as opposed to the normal green calyx of most lavenders.Ther is also a version known as white Gross which produces white flowers. Zones 5-11

Kew Red Spanish - Mature Height: 16 to 18 inches. Pinkish Purple flowers in spring amd early summer. Zones 8-11

Pinnata Lavender Mature Height:1.5 to 2 feet.Small purple flowers appear in spring and early to mid summer. Pinnata will not tolerate even the lightest of frosts. Also referred to as Fern Leaf Lavender due to its unusual fern like leaf structure. Zones 10-11.

Provence Lavender - Mature Height: 16 to 18 inches. Elongated thin flower wand of light purple blossoms appear in spring and early summer. Zones 5-11

Sweet Lavender - Mature Height: 3 to 5 feet. Flowers range from pale blue to purple. Sweet lavender has a high menthol content and a minty taste which does not meld well with the lavender, it is best used for aesthetic purposes. Zones 8-11

Woolly Lavender - Mature Height: 2.5 to 3 feet. Small dark purple blossoms appear in mid summer one of the longest and latest growing seasons of all lavenders. Zones 8-11

Yellow Lavender - Mature Height: 2.5 to 3 feet. Creamy Yellow flowers in spring and early summer. Bolder more robust aroma than other lavender varieties Zones 7-11
