Radishes are a side show in the gardening and vegetable lovers realm. Yes they are peppery, crisp, crunchy but they take back stage to Tomatoes, Corn, Cucumbers, lettuce and other staples of our salad bowl and garden plots. They are commonly grown in between other crops as spacers and as fill ins for underutilized space.

The radish has been devoured by Humans deep into the bowels of recorded history and probably even longer. They are made note of in ancient Chinese writings of over 4,500 years ago and the Egyptians are known to have fed them to the pyramid laborers. The rulers more than likely used them like we do, as salad or snacks to compliment their savory meat and fish, or preserved like pickles which are mentioned in the Bible.

Radishes not only taste good but they are good for you as well. They are not quite a super food such as Goji, Rhubarb, turmeric and a few others, but chomping done on some radishes certainly does a body good.

A serving of Radishes, about 3.5 ounces, conatins 25% of the daily recommended requirement of Vitamin C. The assets of Vitamin C have been heralded ever since the Brits starting making their sailors suck on limes, even more so in Modern times as we learn more about it and how our bodies utilize it.

Riboflavin aka Vitamin B2 is a soluble nutrient. Our bodies need a daily dose of it as we are unable to store it, it is not self replenishing. Riboflavin is vital in unlocking energy from the nutrients we consume . It also has some antioxidant properties.

Folate, aka vitamin B9, is another essential vitamin. Folate encourages cell and tissue growth and plays a role in DNA repair.

Dietary Fiber is another benefit of Radishes. A serving of Radish will provide roughly 4 percent of the recommended daily allowance.

Radishes, although peppery in taste will actually decrease excessive body heat, they serve as a natural cooling agent.

The same compounds in Radish that give its pungent flavor is used by herbalists to help eliminate excessive mucus in the body common when combating colds and flu. They are also used by herbalists to alleviate sore throats and clear clogged sinuses.

Radishes serve as a natural cleansing agent for our intestinal tracts and digestive system. It helps break down and eliminate stationary and foul food, residue and toxins that accumulate over time. For this reason they are recommended to relieve indigestion and associated issues. Eastern herbalists believe that radishes will purge toxins and science seems to validate what they have long held true.

Radishes are cousins to Broccoli and cruciferous vegetables. Cruciferous vegetables contain phytonutrients that work wonders in protecting against cancers.
