How to Make Your Own Butters - Including Almond, Apple, Cinnamon, Garlic, Strawberry and Peanut Butter

Apple butter is basically Apple sauce in an extremely concentrated form. It is made by slowly cooking apples with water and cider as well as assorted spices to a point where the natural sugar found in apples caramelizes. The concentrated sugar gives apple butter a much longer shelf life as opposed to apple sauce.

It also lends itself to more diverse uses - have you ever heard of spreading apple sauce on a piece of bread ? Apple Butter - you betcha.


Approximately 4.5 lbs. mid size sweet apples

1 1/2 qts. cider

2 1/2 - 3 cups of sugar

1/4 tsp. nutmeg

1 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. allspice

1 tsp. cloves

Remove from heat and let cool.

Wash and slice firm, tart cooking apples {Not overly sweet}.Do not core, seed or peel.

Add cider and boil 15 minutes or until soft. Press through sieve - you should have about 3 qts. of pulp

Gently boil the pulp for 1 hour or until it begins to thicken, stirring occasionally.

Stir in spices and continue cooking slowly 3 hours or until thickened, stirring frequently.

Pour into hot sterilized jars, leaving 1/4" head space.then Seal and label. Makes about 3-1/2 pints.
