Apple pie is about as American as Apple Pie. It's a fruit pie in which the main ingredient is the apple filling.

Made and Served in several regional and traditional variations , it is frequently topped with ice cream or whipped cream and sometimes cheese such as my Apple Cheesecake Pie. In addition to pies this filling can also be used with a number of tarts and assorted pastries.


6 pounds apples

4 1/2 cups white sugar

1 cup cornstarch

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

10 cups water

2 teaspoons salt

3 tablespoons lemon juice

A few drops yellow food coloring.

1.In a large pan, mix sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add salt and water and mix well.

2.Bring to a boil and cook until thick and bubbly.

3.Remove from heat and add lemon juice and food coloring.

4.Sterilize canning jars, lids and rings by boiling them in a large pot of water.

5.Peel, core, and slice apples.

6.Pack the sliced apples into hot canning jars.

7.Leave at least a 1/2 inch of head space.

8.Fill jars with hot syrup and gently remove any bubbles with a knife.

9.Put lids on and process in a water bath canner for 20 minutes

Seal, label and freeze if not using right away.
